I finally got to visit Hillsong Church when my family went on vacation a month ago to New York City. What I mean by “finally” is I had to go because I knew I wouldn't hear the end of it if I didn't go while I was there. I am on staff at a church in Fort Worth, Texas and am surrounded by Hillsongites: "We should dress like them." "We should create our stage sets or videos like them!"
You know you’ve got it bad when you try an Australian accent while saying, "Come on church."
So what did I experience when I showed up at the Best Buy theater located right in the middle of Times Square?
I believe most people associate creativity with the ones who amaze us with a paint brush or an instrument. Creativity is credited to the film makers and the actors but those are just talents and skills paired with creativity.
Creativity is not definied as “being an artist.” It’s not being a musician or designer of any sort. While those obviously involve creativity, it is so much bigger than just artistic expression.
Lately I’ve been stressing over things I feel to be really big game-changers for me and my family. This can get out of hand as I spend a lot of time dwelling on how things could be in the future, or wondering why things aren't already improving or changing. My vision clouds with the possibilities and obstacles till I can’t see clearly.
That’s when my supervisor shook me awake with these two words: "Just relax."
Have you ever found a book that speaks your language? I am not saying that you agree with every word, but when you read it you find yourself thinking, " I say this all the time," or "I have tried to communicate this for a while." You find a printed piece that puts it in better words than you could have imagined. As an artist, designer, film maker, and a detailed, organized planner, this book is 100% me. Steal Like an Artist, by Austin Kleon, is one of my new favorites.
If you know me you know this one simple truth. I am not an outdoorsy guy. I am not an athlete and I do not care about cars or guns. I do enjoy time outside and even playing some sports or outdoor activities but it is never my first choice. EVER. I do not like to sweat, I do not like public bathrooms and I would rather spend way more money paying for a cabin then ever sleeping out in a tent.
